Taking Care of Your Eyes: Vision Health
If you don’t already wear glasses or contacts, it may be easy for you to forget about your vision. Many people assume their vision is perfect and will always stay this way, not taking in the idea that vision changes with age and a negative change can sometimes be curbed with regular checkups.
When you leave your home, it’s important that you’re wearing protective eyewear. Your eyes are only made to see certain types of light and the sunlight is way too bright and damaging for eyes to handle. Staring directly into the sun can result in your retina being damaged.
Milk, fruits and vegetables are excellent for your eyes.
Milk is especially full of the right minerals needed to promote good eye health. Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and carrots are especially good for your eyes. As far as fruits go, apples, pears and oranges promote eye health.
Eye strain can be a real problem. It happens when we make our eyes work for a very long time, straining the eye muscles. It’s important to watch TV, read or use your computer with lots of lights on in order to reduce eye strain.
Important to eye care is a good night of rest.
This seems to be the key for a lot of health concerns, but if you’re tired, your muscles, including the muscles that work your eyes, just aren’t as strong as they should be and then can be more stressful for your eyes.
You should visit an eye doctor at least every couple of years, but if you are over the age of 60, it’s highly recommended that you visit the eye doctor at least once a year.
It’s not good for your eyes to just sit and stare at the computer for hours on end. If you must do this, it’s a good idea to stop every 15 to 20 minutes or so to give your eyes a break. On the other hand, there is no real evidence pointing to the fact that prolonged computer use can cause vision damage. If you do have to sit at a desk for a prolonged period of time, make sure your keyboard tray, computer chair and computer monitor are all set up properly for you. You should be able to sit comfortably for hours, if need be. Not making sure of this can cause your eyes to have to strain more.
