Dental Health and How to Take Care of Your Teeth
Dental health is extremely important to your overall general health. Most people don’t realize this, but lack of dental work can sometimes lead to some pretty serious health conditions. Often times, elderly people will avoid going to the dentist and will get an infection of some sort in their mouths, which can lead to serious illness and in some cases, death.
It’s important that you’re brushing your teeth at least twice a day, but ideally, after each meal. Chewing teeth cleaning gum in between meals can be very helpful. Avoid beverages which can stain your teeth such as coffee and teas.
Dentists recommend flossing each time you brush. If you’ve never been shown how to properly floss, make sure you ask your dentist the next time you visit him or her. There is a method to flossing and you may not be doing your teeth any good if you aren’t doing it each day.
You should be visiting your dentist approximately twice a year or every six months. The dentist will do a cleaning and an examination and that should be all that is needed unless a cavity or some other ailment is discovered. Your dentist will most likely take x-rays every two years or so.
Make sure the toothpaste you are using has fluoride in it. Fluoride is what makes teeth healthy and strong.
Keep your stress and depression to a minimum if at all possible. Recent studies show that stress and depression can lead to issues in your mouth!
It’s important to start your children early when it comes to dental care. My daughter is just under 17 months old and she knows how to brush her teeth. She loves brushing her teeth with her Spongebob Squarepants toothbrush so much that all I have to say is, “come on, let’s go brush your teeth”, and she races into the bathroom ahead of me.
We got her started with children’s start toothpaste (they can swallow it and it won’t hurt them) and toothbrush. When she would eat her breakfast in the morning, I would brush her teeth for her. When she was used to it and got a little bit older, we just started taking her into the bathroom, putting the toothpaste on the toothbrush and handing it to her. I then grabbed my toothbrush and showed her how to do it. That was all she needed and she started brushing like crazy!
